Smart Grid

We have an infrastructure crisis.  In 2002 The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company published a report titled Life Cycle Management of Utility Transformer Assets, which outlined the state of our infrastructure.  The last major build-out of our grid was around 1973-74 and we have not seen much activity since. With a 30+ year old grid we need to leverage more out of existing equipment.

In a speech delivered at the IEEE Power Engineering Society’s Summer 2002 meeting, Clark Gellings from EPRI reported “the load growth in the US has been about 35% over the last 10 years. But our transmission capacity has only grown 18% over that period. To compound the problem, wholesale interstate and intrastate transactions have grown 400% during that time.”
